Vicente L. Rafael Papers Arrive at Cornell University

The first installment of Vicente L. Rafael’s papers, comprising 37 boxes of academic materials, has arrived at Cornell University’s John M. Echols Collection on Southeast Asia at Kroch Library. Donated by his widow and fellow scholar, Lila Ramos Shahani, the collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, books, and materials related to Rafael’s teaching and research.

The donation fulfills one of Rafael’s final wishes. Cornell held a lasting place in his intellectual life as the university where he earned his master’s degree and doctorate, developed enduring friendships, and benefited from the mentorship of his advisers. He remained grateful for those formative years throughout his life.

We thank Shahani and the friends who helped sort, organize, and prepare the papers for shipment. The materials will become available to researchers once the library completes accessioning and preparation for preservation and use.
