University of Washington to Host Conference on Vicente L. Rafael’s Work

The University of Washington will host a two-day public conference in 2027 devoted to the work of Vicente L. Rafael. Organized by the Center for Southeast Asia and its Diasporas (CSEAD) and held at the Simpson Center for the Humanities, the conference will examine recurring questions in Rafael’s scholarship, including empire, colonialism, authoritarianism, biopolitics, and translation.

Related initiatives will include a special journal issue, an exhibition of documents from the colonial Philippines, and a graduate seminar. The call for papers and further details will be shared when available.

We thank CSEAD and colleagues in Anthropology, History, International Studies, Asian Languages and Literatures, and Ethnic Studies for organizing this initiative. Their collaboration will provide an opportunity to honor Rafael’s contributions and pursue new conversations around the questions his work continues to raise.
